(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis man is in big trouble with federal investigators.
A grand jury has indicted George Robey on 25 counts linked to stealing cars, making them over and re-selling them with phony titles and other documentation.
U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says the man is 66-year-old George Robey.
The indictment pinpoints 17 different vehicles stolen in the past seven years from car dealerships across Central Indiana. Charges allege Robey would go car shopping, test drive a vehicle and swap the car key with a look-a-like key. Authorities say Robey would also get a vehicle identification number and use it to create seemingly authentic driver's licenses and vehicle registration and then somehow use those documents to get duplicate keys.
Hogsett says Robey would make sure the VINs matched with titles, registrations and licenses on stolen vehicles. Hogsett says Robey would sell the altered vehicles with documents to unsuspecting buyers.
Authorities arrested Robey in December after they say he sold a stolen vehicle to an undercover state police officer.
If convicted, Robey faces more than 100 years on the 25 conspiracy and trafficking counts. Each count also carries a $250,000 fine.
