Investigation In Fatal Shooting 17-year-old Turned Over To Prosecutor

Last updated on Wednesday, February 1, 2012

(SHELBYVILLE) - An investigation of the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy last month has been turned over to the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Conservation officers said Tuesday that they have finished their investigation of the fatal shooting of Brandon Spangler, 17, of Flushing, Mich., on Dec. 30.

Spangler was killed while playing paintball in a wooded area near County Road 550 West, three miles south of State Road 44 in Shelby County.

Jason Bagley, 41, who owns the property, said he's had problems with coyotes and shot at what he thought was a coyote moving along the woodline.

Bagley, who is friends with Spangler's father, Mark Spangler, of Greenwood, said he had given the family permission to use the area for a game of paintball, but said he didn't know four teens were on the land at the time.
