(RICHMOND)- A 31-year-old Richmond man has been arrested after he tried to sell drugs to a state trooper, police said.
Pendleton Trooper Nate Raney was on duty but wearing plain clothes when he was approached just after 1 a.m. Wednesday on Richmond's south side.
"As he crossed the street, he saw a man walking towards him briskly from a sidewalk. Raney's first thought was that the man was going to try to rob him," a state police news release said.
Instead, the man struck up a conversation with Raney, saying his girlfriend had just kicked him out and that he was looking to sell some drugs, police said.
The man offered the trooper several different pills and some marijuana cigarettes, police said.
When Raney identified himself as a trooper, the man laughed, thinking he was joking, police said.
Raney arrested Justin Michael McNamara, 31, of Richmond on preliminary charges of dealing a controlled substance and dealing marijuana.
McNamara was being held in the Wayne County Jail on Wednesday.
