(NOBELSVILLE) - Opening statements began in the Hamilton County Superior Court in the voting fraud trial of Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White.
White is accused of misrepresenting his true address in Fishers when voting in the May 2012 primary election when he was on the ballot.
A grand jury indicted White on seven fraud and theft charges, and Governor Mitch Daniels has called on White to resign.
Special prosecutor John Dowd told jurors the state's case rests on Indiana election law and where White was actually living election day.
White is accused of listing his ex-wife's address in another voting precinct across town. However, White claims he had an agreement with his former wife to use her condo as his legal residence before he re-married and bought a new home.
"Somebody tried to get away with something," Associate Prosecutor Dan Siegler told jurors. "Tried to keep that conduct hidden and got caught. It's about deceit and cheating."
Siegler cited several signed documents indicating White allegedly misrepresented his true address so that he could continue representing Delaware Township on the Fishers town council while running for state office.
"What is one of the primary duties of Indiana secretary of state?" Siegler asked. "It has something to do with election law."
If convicted on any of the counts, White would be forced to step down from his position as secretary of state.
