(FAIRLAND) - A homeowner shot and wounded a suspected burglar early this morning.
The incident happened in the 8100 block of West Sycamore Road in the town of Fairland in Shelby County.
Shelby County authorities got a call about a home invasion robbery around 3:30 a.m. at that home on West Sycamore Road. Investigators tell Eyewitness News that several shots were fired, hitting some of the windows to the home. Investigators aren't sure if the burglar just outside the home, or inside the home, when those shots were fired.
Shelby County dispatch confirmed the person shot was struck 'in the buttocks' and transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Detective Dan Crafton of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department praised the homeowner for using restraint before firing at the would-be intruder.
"He waited till the last possible moment, he didn't fire blindly," Crafton said at the scene. "He waited until the suspect was coming in his house. He was forced to (fire)."
Crafton also credited the homeowner for protecting his family.
