(TERRE HAUTE) - The maternity ward at Union Hospital in Terre Haute got a special gift Monday: a collection of hand-knitted hats, blankets, mittens, scarves and booties.
But according to WTHI TV the gifts didn't come from a quilting circle or a home-economics class; they were made by prisoners at the Federal Penitentiary in Terre Haute.
Chaplain Scott Bonham said making these knitted-creations gives inmates a constructive way to spend their time and give to the community.
"One man said to me ... 'I used to watch TV for hours a day. Now I go to my cell and crochet,'" said Bonham. "It gives them a chance to do something good."
Those who work at Union Hospital's maternity ward said the gifts are an added touch to the stay of their patients.
"Our babies can stay up to ten-to-13 weeks," said JoAnne Goldbort. "This is an opportunity to wrap them in warmth, and it makes it more homey for our families when our families have to stay that long."
In all, the inmates donated 71 hats, 25 blankets, five mittens, three scarves and two sets of booties.
