(INDIANAPOLIS) - Danyelle Smith, a day after her 5-year-old daughter was killed in a school bus crash along with the bus driver, is seeking to learn why. “What happened? I need answers and I want them,” she said.
According to Emily Longnecker with WTHR 13, Danyelle Smith got some of those answers a day later, but it did little to ease the pain of losing Donasty.
On Wednesday, the coroner said the girl died of multiple blunt force injuries from that crash. It happened when the bus she was riding in collided with a railroad overpass.
"It's not even just the concrete," said Danyelle Smith. "It's what happened on that bus pertaining to that bus for that to even occur to touch the concrete," she said.
IMPD investigators examined videotape taken inside the school bus, but said they saw nothing that looked like it could have caused the driver to lose control and crash into the bridge support.
Inspectors with the Indiana State Police also said they found nothing wrong with the bus that could have caused the accident either.
"What happened for the bus driver for him to crash?" asked Danyelle Smith.
State Police said they reviewed records of the bus driver, Thomas Spencer II, and found he had the proper permits and license required to drive a school bus, along with proper medical certification. Their investigation found nothing in Spencer's medical history that would have prevented him from being able to do his job safely.
Spencer's autopsy revealed he also died from injuries he received in the crash.
