(INDIANAPOLIS) - Criminal charges will not be filed after a 1-year-old boy drowned in a baptismal pool at a church on Indianapolis’ northwest side last month.
Juan Cardenas drowned Feb. 22 in 2 feet of water in an uncovered baptismal pool at Praise Fellowship Assembly of God, which also houses an unlicensed church day care, police said.
Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry decided against filing charges after reviewing the case with police detectives, said Curry's spokeswoman Brienne Delaney.
She said officials believe the incident amounts to a tragic accident and that detectives found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
Legislation to tighten restrictions for church day cares raised after the drowning stalled in the Legislature.
