(GARY) - A group of demonstrators took advantage of an unusually-warm Saturday to show their anger at the U.S. Postal Service for plans to close the Gary processing and distribution center.
Many of them are members of the American Postal Workers Union Local 266, who say moving mail sorting to Bedford Park, Illinois will only hurt mail service to section of northwest Indiana. The mail would then return to Gary for distribution.
Postal Workers Local 266 President Ben Barnes says at issue is money. Barnes says Congress could do something to keep the centers open, by passing a measure to return billions in over-payments into two retirement plans into the Post Service's general accounts.
