(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue students will launch a balloon thousands of feet into the air in preparation for an intercollegiate contest this month.
Purdue students to launch high-altitude balloon
The students will launch the high-altitude balloon Saturday at Purdue's intramural athletic fields at 10 a.m. The launch is open to the public.
The balloon will soar to 100,000 feet. That's four times the height that commercial planes fly. It will collect atmospheric data about temperature and humidity on its way up as well as take photos.
The team will then hop in their cars and chase the balloon to its landing spot.
The launch is in preparation for the 2012 High Altitude Intercollegiate Balloon Competition on March 31 at the University of Evansville.
