(DEARBORN COUNTY)(WTHR13) - Take one packet of Kool Aid. Just add water and stir. If you forget the sugar, don’t worry. You won’t need it, if you’re not going to be drinking the Kool aid.
"You put it in the microwave for 5 minutes," explains 10-year-old Rachel Neeley.
Rachel and her friends had another idea at recent sleep over at Rachel's house.
"She said, 'Hey, you wanna dye your hair with Kool Aid? ' And I said, 'You can dye your hair with Kool Aid?' And she said, "Yeah, c'mon, let's try it.'" explains Rachel of the conversation she and a girlfriend had.
"It just seemed like a thing little girls do on a sleepover," explains Rachel's father, Charles Neeley.
The result was bright blue hair for Rachel after she stuck her hair in the Kool Aid mix and let it sit.
"I thought it was pretty cool at first," the fifth grader from Sunman-Dearborn Intermediate School says.
It turned out though to be a recipe for trouble.
"Rachel will not be permitted to return to school until the dye is completely out," says Charles Neeley as he reads from a letter the school sent home with his daughter this week.
According to the school, Rachel's blue hair violated dress code.
"It says students are not permitted to school with their hair dyed and sprayed other than their natural color," explains Rachel's dad.
After she missed only one day though, the school reconsidered and allowed Rachel back in school.
"I've had a crash course in hair dyes over the past 24 hours," says Charles Neeley.
This father and daughter have also had a crash course in getting grape Kool Aid out of blonde hair.
"The dandruff shampoo remedy is what we tried today," he explains.
"If we have to, we might hit it with some white vinegar," he adds.
"It's starting to turn a little green now," he explains of his daughter's hair after several washes.
As for her future hair color, "I like being a blonde," says Rachel.
And when it comes to Kool aid, from now on, Rachel's decided to stick to drinking it.
