(CARMEL) - No one was injured in two Wednesday night fires that investigators suspect were caused by lightning.
The first case in the Laurelwood neighborhood in Carmel was called in around 7:30 Wednesday night. Investigators reported the home sustained most of the damage in the roof area, leading them to believe that a lightning strike caused the fire.
The Carmel Fire Department was called to another fire at around 9:15 Wednesday night, this time to a neighborhood clubhouse near Hazel Dell Parkway and Cherry Creek Boulevard. Witnesses told investigators they heard loud noises from the storm and that the fire started minutes later. Most of the damage to the building was to the roof, again leading officials to believe that lightning started the fire.
The City of Carmel had two working fires at the same time, so the Noblesville, Westfield, Fishers, and Indianapolis Fire Departments assisted in fighting the flames.
Bruce Knott from the Carmel Fire Department noted in a press release that "the ability to depend on surrounding fire departments to assist during severe weather and other large scale emergencies is critical."
While the Carmel Fire Department believes both fires were started by lightning, investigations will be done to officially confirm the causes.
