New Health Rankings For Indiana Communities

Last updated on Tuesday, April 3, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - How healthy is your county? Independent rankings just released show which communities across the country are promoting good health.

The University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation came up with the ranking, and states like Indiana use it as a tool to create healthier initiatives, like Get In Shape Indiana.

There are 92 counties in the state. Locally, Lawrence County was at 72; Daviess 46; Washington 64; Greene 81; Orange 66; Martin 68; Monroe 17; Jackson 70; Brown 6.

Many factors were taken into consideration in the 3rd annual "check up" of counties across the nation. Some of the factors included how many fast food restaurant located in the county, to the amount of physical activity in a community. It's something the state health department takes very seriously.

Kristin Adams from the Indiana State Department of Health says, "The partnership with the state and local health departments is really important for the rankings. It really gives us a guidance of where we need to put our dollars forward. Where do we need to develop our partnerships with our counties and with our local business leaders, our local non profits, our local hospitals."

Here's a look at counties in Indiana that are the healthiest:

1) Hamilton

2) Boone

3) LaGrange

4) Dubois

Here is a list of the counties in Indiana that are not promoting good health:
