Purdue Changes Logo, Students Ask Why?

Last updated on Thursday, April 26, 2012

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Come next fall, student athletes and Boilermaker fans will sport new logos at Purdue.

Krista Henery, of WLFI reports, while the changes aren't a major overhaul, there are some mixed emotions on campus.

"I think introducing this new one, we're going to take a step back and say 'What is that, we're use to the older one where it looks like the train is moving,'" Purdue student, Adam Robertson said.

"It's not such a drastic departure from what they've used before that I wonder why it was even necessary to make any change like that," Purdue student, David Combron said.

Though not much will change, the idea behind the new, 'clean' design all stems from Nike.

" Nike presented it to us," Tom Schott with Purdue athletics said. "It looks real great in embroidery stitched up and it's just a cleaner look than the previous train."

While it might take some a closer look to notice the difference, others said they just aren't too fond of the new piece of art.

"It doesn't really bother me but I'm a fan of the old logo more than I am a fan of the new logo," Purdue student, Hamilton Yeager said.

"The newer logo I think is too streamlined and the older logo actually looks like it's moving and coming out of the top left corner," Robertson said.

And one graphic designer said if it were up to him, he'd change the whole thing.

"If I was going to make changes, I'd make significant changes. I'd completely re-design it because it's just a variation of the same theme," Cambron said.

But when it comes down to the bottom of things, most students said as long as the Boilermakers are getting wins across the board, they'll take either logo, old or new.

"As long as Purdue is winning, I'm good. I mean that's what I enjoy. I enjoy just seeing Purdue win," Yeager said.

"As long as it still says Purdue and represents the Boilermakers and it's classy then that's what Purdue is all about," Purdue student, Krista Davis said.

The new logo has been released and can be found in some stores, but it won't be on any student athletes' jerseys and the majority of merchandise until the fall.
