(MORGAN-MONROE FOREST) - Morgan-Monroe State Forest grew by 8,000 trees Friday.
The inaugural planting of the trees took place in South Central Indiana as a part of the Indiana Tree Project.
The goal of the project is to plant 1 million new trees in Hoosier forests by 2016.
The Department of Natural Resources is asking for a $10 which covers the cost of the land, the sapling, planting and maintenance. Every person who donates will received a special sapling number they can use to track the tree's development.
"I'm pretty sure people appreciate the aesthetics of it, we appreciate the economics of it, there's the environmental side of it," said John Seifert with the DNR's Department of Forestry.
"There's also the wildlife side of it, so collectively, this is a great opportunity to take care of lots of environmental issues and economic issues."
The project will also plant trees at several other locations throughout the year.
