(SHELBYVILLE) - A Shelbyville man took the 7-year-old girl he was baby-sitting along with him when he broke into a home over the weekend, police said.
Officers were called to the 100 block of Elliott Street on Saturday on a report of a man burglarizing a home.
Police said they found the suspect, Dustin Whisenant, along with a 7-year-old girl sitting in a car near the home. But when officers tried to approach the car, he took off.
Whisenant's car was found in a garage in the 800 block of West Washington Street.
Police recovered the girl and sent a police dog in after Whisenant refused to come out.
"The juvenile had no connection to the crime committed," said Shelbyville police Lt. Michael Turner, in a news release.
Police said the victim's home was ransacked and that Whisenant allegedly took most of his children's toys. He also took a wedding ring.
Whisenant was treated at a local hospital and then arrested. He was formally charged Monday with burglary resulting in bodily injury, theft, neglect of a dependent, resisting law enforcement and obstruction of justice.
Whisenant was held on $50,000 bond, The Shelbyville News reported. His trial was set for July 16.
