Police: Mom Left Infant On Porch Unattended

Last updated on Wednesday, May 16, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis mother left her 2-month-old infant unattended on the front porch of a vacant property on the city’s east side, police said.

About 6:45 p.m., Indianapolis Metro Police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of North Kealing Avenue on reports of an abandoned infant at a vacant rental property.

Investigators said the landlord of the property was at the home to make minor repairs when he found an infant sitting in a car seat.

The landlord called police after unsuccessful attempts to find the baby's parents.

When officers arrived at the property, they found the infant sitting inside a car seat next to a diaper bag.

Investigators said documents inside the bag identified the baby's mother and officers began searching for her.

Nearly an hour later, police spotted a woman walking near the property. Upon questioning, officers determined that the woman was Starr Eldridge, 21, of Indianapolis, the mother of the infant, investigators said.

Elridge was arrested and faces preliminary charges of felony child neglect and possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

Police said the baby was not injured and was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
