Teen Takes Mom's Corvette And Crashes

Last updated on Tuesday, May 8, 2012

(ANDREWS) - A 16-year-old boy’s joyride in his mother’s Corvette ended with the sports car totaled and the boy in the hospital, police in Huntington County said.

Andrews Town Marshal Van Juillerat says the teen - who does not have his driver's license - took the car early Sunday morning without his mother's permission, then crashed it into a utility pole on Huntington County Road 200 North.

The teen was following a friend in another car, Juillerat said, and went to pass his friend but lost control when he swerved to miss an oncoming vehicle. The teen escaped with minor injuries, but he was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Juillerat said the boy's mother was thankful he's not badly hurt, but she was very upset about the car.

"I believe it was a 1996 Corvette T-Top. [It was] her pride and joy," Juillerat said. "When I spoke with the mother, she calmed down a little bit. And they understand they're fortunate that they still have a son to deal with."

Police said the 16-year-old will be charged with reckless driving and driving without a license.
