(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue University’s choice of Gov. Mitch Daniels as its next president has cost the school a $1 million gift from a former dean.
Marilyn Haring, dean of Purdue's College of Education from 1991 to 2001, said she has rewritten her will to remove a bequest to the university following Daniels' appointment, the Journal Courier reported.
In a letter to the Purdue Board of Trustees and university officials, Haring she's troubled by Daniels' lack of academic experience and his policy decisions related to labor and education funding.
"I regard the appointment of Mr. Daniels as a travesty and insult to academics," she wrote. "Further, in his political career, Mr. Daniels has taken stands that are counter to all that I believe in, such as support for public education, equity and unions to protect and further the well-being of those who labor."
Keith Krach, chairman of Purdue's trustees, told the newspaper he expects increased donations to outpace losses, but stressed that giving to Purdue is a personal decision.
Daniels will take the helm at Purdue in January, after he finishes his second term as governor.
