(SPEEDWAY) - Fire damaged a Speedway church on Saturday for the second time in the building’s history, officials said.
About 11 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to the Saint Christopher Roman Catholic Church in the 1600 block of Lynhurst Drive on reports of a fire alarm.
When firefighters arrived, officials said two pews were scorched and the sprinklers system caused considerable water damage.
"The sprinkler system once again saved the church. It probably would have been gone by the time they got here," said the Reverend Mike Welch.
A previous fire damaged the church in 2001 when lightning hit the building.
Officials said Sunday Mass would be held in the church's gym.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
