(SEELYVILLE) - Vigo County law enforcement Wednesday confirm a wanted fugitive was killed by police following a brief foot chase and stand off.
Law enforcement officials say that Justin Compton attacked police with a knife. Police then returned fire. Compton died at the scene.
A K-9 search for Compton started just before 9 p.m. Wednesday by Vigo County law enforcement.
Compton, 26, was at the Vigo County Courthouse for a sentencing three weeks ago.
When he exited the courtroom, he jumped from the second floor rotunda, and then fled the building.
Detectives were told Compton is suffering from a terminal illness and fled because the sentence he received was longer then his life expectancy.
This is not Compton's first run-in with law enforcement. Compton has been arrested at least 15 times previously.
