(ELWOOD) - Residents are uneasy in a Madison County neighborhood where crews dismantled a bomb that investigators believe was targeted at an Elwood couple.
A quarter-mile radius around the 4200 block of North State Road 9 was evacuated Monday as crews investigated and later deactivated the device, which was in a bag.
Police swarmed the area where the bomb was found, the latest incident involving the couple, RTV6's Derrik Thomas reported.
On March 4, someone set fire to the victims' car. A week later, their garage was torched. Later in the same month, someone threw acid in the woman's face as she went to work.
"We are not naming them. We're trying to protect them, trying to keep them safe," said Elwood Police Chief Sam Hanna.
Police said they don't have a motive in the attacks, nor do they have suspects.
"You would think by this instance they would know who it might be," said Darrin Key, who was one of the people evacuated. "It's kind of disturbing that the people who were terrorizing this couple were able to track them down in our neighborhood."
As neighbors worry about their safety, police are keeping a pretty tight lid on information in their investigation.
When asked about the potential power of the bomb and what was used to make it, Madison County sheriff's Maj. Brian Bell said, "I'm not at liberty to say right now."
The components used to make the bomb were taken to an Indiana State Police laboratory.
