(EVANSVILLE) - A 15-year-old girl is in custody after Evansville police said she attacked her mother with a steak knife after the mother tried to read the teen’s Facebook messages late Monday night, the Evansville Courier and Press reported.
The incident occurred shortly after the teen, whose name was not released by police, was located after being reported as a missing child on Sunday.
Regina Dillworth, 42, was listed in good condition at St. Mary's Medical Center as of Tuesday morning.
According an Evansville Police Department report, Dillworth was trying to read her daughter's messages on her cellphone when the teen went into the kitchen and grabbed a steak knife. During the confrontation, Dillworth was cut at least six times. When police arrived to the apartment in the 600 block of Chateau Drive, officers found Dillworth on the ground outside and bleeding heavily from her forearm, according to the affidavit.
Dillworth and other members of the girl's family and friends posted several messages Monday on social media websites asking for help in locating the girl.
Dillworth was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center, where emergency room workers discovered that she had been stabbed in the back as well, according to the report.
Police located the girl on Shamrock Drive, not far from where the incident reportedly took place. She was taken to Deaconess Hospital and later transported to the Youth Care Center juvenile detention facility. She faces a preliminary charge of battery causing serious injury with a knife, a class C felony.
