(LAWRENCE) - The city of Lawrence has passed its own smoking ban which mirrors Indianapolis’ ban.
The Lawrence City Council passed the ban by a vote of 5-3.
Councilman Tom Shevlot voted for the ban and says prospective businesses that were looking to move to Lawrence and Marion County felt having a smoking ban was important to them.
Councilman Carl Barnett voted against the ban, saying it didn't give business owners a choice. The ban excludes private clubs but bans smoking from hotels and bars.
Keith Johnson, Deputy Chief of Staff for Lawrence Mayor Dean Jessup, says the mayor supports the ban and will sign it into law on Tuesday.
