Police: Coach Punched Female Basketball Player After Loss

Last updated on Wednesday, July 11, 2012

(FISHERS) - Fishers Police have charged a Milwaukee high school girls basketball coach with battery.

This after witnesses say he attacked one of his players after they lost a tournament game Monday.

Police Spokesman Tom Wegers says it happened just after 1:30 pm at the Indiana Fieldhouse Sports Complex Monday.

Wegers says 47-year-old Fred Freeman got into an argument with one of the Wisconsin Stealers' female players. The argument got heated and witnesses says Freeman punched the 17-year-old in the face, threw her to the ground, jumped on top of her and put his hands around her throat. Wegers says the girl suffered minor scratches.

The parent of another player reported the incident.

Wegers says they're investigating whether Freeman fled the scene after the police call out. They later found him at a nearby restaurant where Wegers says he admitted to the incident.

Freeman has been released from the Hamilton County Jail and an initial court date is pending.
