(FRANKLIN) - Filing incorrect mileage reports led to the suspension of a Johnson County Sheriff’s detective, the sheriff said on Wednesday.
Detective Tevis McLaughlin was suspended for six weeks and his patrol vehicle was taken away for six months. He also can't do part-time work that involves his arrest powers for two months.
Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox said McLaughlin had no previous disciplinary issues. He asked other members of the department to learn from Cox and not lie on documents.
A GPS device was installed in McLaughlin's vehicle after suspicion that he was driving more off-duty miles than he was admitting. When he turned in a mileage report, it didn't match up with what the GPS said.
The sheriff's department merit board had a hearing about the case on Tuesday, in which the board issued McLaughlin's punishment.
