(COLUMBUS) - After a string of recent burglaries, the Columbus Police Department is hoping property owners are taking precautions to protect their homes and businesses,The Republic reports.
Columbus Police Department spokesperson Lt. Matt Myers said that a camera, or a light could help protect residences and businesses from burglaries.
"The main thing is taking proactive behaviors, if you can," Myers said. "Don't give burglars an opportunity."
Last year, a total of 416 burglaries were reported in Columbus. So far in 2012, there have been 250. Ten occurred just last weekend.
The front door at Burnside's American Flags located at 5150 North National Road was kicked in at around 5 p.m. on Aug. 19.
After a loud alarm sounded, intruders were out of the business within a few minutes. Police arrived shortly after.
Owner David Burnside said nothing was stolen.
