(INDIANAPOLIS) - A central Indiana coroner who drove drunk to a death scene will step down at the end of the month.
Hancock County Coroner Tamara VanGundy, 49, was arrested in May after she responded to a late-night suicide and staggered from her car, smelling of alcohol, and registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.16 percent an hour later, police said.
VanGundy pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and was sentenced Wednesday to one year on probation, her attorney, Carl Brizzi, told RTV6's news-gathering partner WIBC.
Brizzi said VanGundy made the decision to resign but stay on the ballot in November because she felt it was the right thing to do for her and for the integrity of the job.
He said she will essentially reinterview for her job and let the voters decide if she should be re-elected to the office.
