(INDIANAPOLIS) - A man was shot by police after he became combative and ran from officers during a child welfare check, police said.
RTV 6 reports, officials with the Department of Child Services were checking on the welfare of a child who could be heard screaming near East Washington Street and North Riley Avenue just before noon.
"They said they heard a baby was crying all day, and I've heard that for weeks now," said Betsy Gillum, who lives next door to the residence. "You could hear a baby crying over there like all day long. You don't know what to do about it you don't know who to call or what to do."
Police said a man inside the house became angry and when they tried to subdue him, he became combative, prompting officers to use a stun gun.
"However, this had little to no effect as he pulled the Taser prongs out and continued to resist, running from the officers with his hands in his waistband," Indianapolis police spokeswoman Sgt. Linda Jackson said in a statement.
The man stopped running but refused to take his hands out of his pants, despite repeated commands, prompting the officer to open fire, police said.
"I looked out the window and it was somebody running around the fence, then I heard two gunshots and the cops yelled, 'Shots fired!' and then they took off," Gillum said.
"Officers pursued him, shots were fired and the suspect was shot by officers. The suspect has been taken to Wishard Hospital and the officer is OK," said IMPD Public Information Officer Michael Hewitt.
The man, who was identified as Johnny Edmonds, 33, was shot in the lower left and right legs. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital.
Edmonds was released from the hospital into custody at the Marion County Arrestee Processing Center Monday night..
Edmonds is facing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, firearm possession by a serious violent felon, drug possession, receiving stolen property and obstruction of justice.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office is expected to file formal charges Tuesday.
No officers were injured in the altercation.
Police said Edmonds was not found to be carrying a gun.
Police said the baby is in the care of child protective services.
The baby's mother is in jail after officers arrested her on an unrelated warrant, police said.
