(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis man has been arrested after he stabbed his own puppy multiple times during an argument with his roommate, police said.
Officers were called to the 1200 block of West Ray Street just after 10 a.m. Friday on a report of a disturbance.
They found two men, one with a knife, arguing in an empty lot, and a woman holding a bloody puppy, police said.
One of the men told police that he and his roommate, John Madden, 22, had gotten into a fight after Madden's puppy ate his cat's food.
Madden got angry, grabbed a knife and took the puppy outside, where he began stabbing him, the man told police.
When officers questioned Madden, he admitted to stabbing the puppy, saying he wanted to put the animal out of its misery, police said.
The puppy, which was hardly breathing, was taken to Indianapolis Animal Care and Control, where it underwent surgery for nine stab wounds, including a 6-inch cut to its belly, officials said.
Madden was arrested on preliminary charges of cruelty to an animal and possession of marijuana.
The puppy was recovering Friday.
