(INDIANAPOLIS) - The man arrested in the death of a 3-year-old girl told police he beat her because she soiled herself, according to court documents.
Jose Cruz, 21, was the boyfriend of the girl's mother. He was arrested after police were called to the home in the 3700 block of Long Wharf Drive Tuesday for the girl's injuries. Carmen Ellis she died Wednesday night .
Cruz told police he beat the 3-year-old with a brown leather belt, shook her, pulled her hair and threw her into a TV, according to the probable cause affidavit. He said he had an outburst because she soiled herself.
Police executing a search warrant at the home took a brown leather belt and black power cord. Medical professionals said the girl had bruises indicating she was struck with a flexible object. She also had blunt force trauma to the abdominal area.
