(UNDATED) - There are about 45,000 Amish residents in Indiana, the third most of any state in the country.
Ohio has the largest Amish population with over 60,000 residents. Pennsylvania ranks second with about 59,000.
Dr. Steve Nolt from Goshen College says the Amish population in the midwest has been here since the early 19th Century. He says the populations in the older settlements continue to grow and we're also seeing newer Amish communities being established in midwestern states with people moving in from places like Pennsylvania, New York and Wisconsin.
Dr. Nolt says farming has been on the decline in most Amish communities. He says Amish people have been focusing more on small business ventures such as furniture shops, metal working shops and construction.
