Last updated on Monday, September 17, 2012

VIGO COUNTY) - Indiana State Police and emergency responders from various Vigo County agencies responded to a multi-vehicle crash Sunday evening.

Fox59 news reports, according to a release from the Indiana State Police, crews were dispatched to the eastbound lanes of I-70 near the 12 mile marker around 6:55 p.m.

Troopers conducting a preliminary investigation report a semi tractor-trailer was disabled on the shoulder waiting for a wrecker to arrive.

When the wrecker arrived, a second semi tractor-trailer became disabled in the driving lane a few feet east of the first.

Traffic was slowing and passing the disabled vehicles when a 2005 Volvo tractor bulling a trailer loaded with frozen food struck the rear of a red 2012 Chevrolet S10 pickup.

That caused a chain reaction forcing the S10 into the rear of a gray 2008 Chevrolet Colorado pickup. Both vehicles then struck the tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder.

The driver of the S10, Charles Loyd and his wife Connie Loyd, age 48, both of Anderson, Ind. were flown to IU Health Methodist Hospital by air ambulance. Both were treated for life threatening head, facial and internal injuries.

The female driver of the Colorado was pronounced dead at the scene by the Vigo County Coroner.

A male passenger of the Colorado was flown to IU Health Methodist Hospital for treatment of head, facial and internal injuries.

State Police say the deceased female was not wearing a seat belt.

An autopsy is scheduled for late Monday afternoon.

Drug and alcohol testing was conducted to determine if either played a role in the crash.
