(INDIANAPOLIS) - With the race for Indiana’s Senate seat too close to call, Indiana’s senior Republican Senator, Richard Lugar, says he will not campaign for the Republican candidate, Richard Mourdock.
According to an associated press report, the highly respected Lugar, told conservative Indiana blogger Abdul Hakim-Shabazz in an interview Monday that he would not actively support Mourdock's campaign.
Mourdock is in a tight race with Democrat Joe Donnelly for Indiana's open Senate seat. Outside groups are spending heavily on the campaign with new ads hitting the air waves on Tuesday.
Mourdock's Tea Party backed campaign used extensive negative campaigning to defeat Lugar for the nomination in May.
Recent polls have shown a surprisingly close race for what would have been a safe Republican seat had Lugar won re-nomination.
