(MARION) — Officers fatally shot a man during a robbery attempt at a store in Marion late Saturday night, Indiana State Police said.
Robert Lee Thompson, 61, went into a Dollar General store at 1101 S. Baldwin Ave. in Marion with a sawed-off shotgun about 9:45 p.m. and demanded money from an employee who was counting the day's receipts, ISP Sgt. Tony Slocum said.
Another employee heard what was happened and called 911 to report the incident, prompting Marion police to respond and set up a perimeter around the store, police said.
Four officers went into the store in search of Thompson, authorities said.
When officers arrived they took cover after Thompson allegedly pointed the shotgun at one of the responding officers, Slocum said.
Thompson was told several times to drop his weapon and refused.
Slocum says Thompson pointed the gun at officers again and officers fired several shots at Thompson.
According to police, Thompson did fire his shotgun at police.
The Grant County Coroner's Office pronounced Thompson dead at the scene.
The officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard operating procedure for a shooting involving officers, pending the outcome of the ISP investigation. Police are not releasing the name of the officers involved in the shooting.
