(ATTICA) - The Attica police chief has resigned over a prank involving eating dog treats.
Bobby Bass resigned Thursday after he refused to accept a reprimand of a week without pay from the mayor, the Journal-Courier reported.
Bass told the newspaper that the incident began when someone gave him a piece of duck jerky meant for dogs and, as a joke, he took a bite of it.
Later, when Bass said the group went to "another location where we felt very comfortable," he gave the jerky to the local superintendent and a school principal.
"One of them took a bite. We told him what it was, and we all had a laugh," Bass told the newspaper.
A person who wasn't present heard about the prank and contacted the mayor's office to complain that Bass' conduct was unprofessional.
"(The mayor) said, 'Let's just put this behind us. I'm going to dock your pay for a week,'" Bass said. "But if no one involved in the prank was offended, and you aren't even going to tell me who placed the complaint, I'm not going to accept that."
Mayor Robert Shepherd told RTV6 that, while he is good friends with Bass, this was the second reprimand involving the chief.
He said Bass was on duty, in uniform and that the prank was poor judgement.
Bass had led the department since January 2011.
