(MUNCIE) - A Muncie woman, whose family was involved in the death of a 5-year-old girl, was sentenced to two years in prison for not telling police about abuse.
She's the fourth member of her household to go to jail for the crime.
Lauren McConniel died from brain damage back in 2010. Doctors testified that she was malnourished and had several bruises on her body along with other injuries investigators classified as unusual.
Investigators said Lauren spent the last months of her life in emotional and physical distress, suffering abuse at the hands of her father, stepmother and three members of her stepmother's family.
In May 2011, a jury found Brittany McConniel - Lee's sister and Lauren's stepmother - guilty of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. The woman got the maximum sentence of 50 years in prison. She was accused of abusing Lauren and failing to seek medical treatment.
Lauren's father, 35-year-old Ryan McConniel, pleaded guilty to a neglect charge. He awaits sentencing. Robert E. Lee - Samra Lee's father and Brittany McConniel's stepfather - pleaded guilty to aiding, inducing or causing neglect. He was sentenced to 50 years. His wife, 46-year-old Angela L. Lee, faces similar allegations. Her trial is set for December.
