(BOONE COUNTY) - Police are looking for a person who struck and killed a woman in a hit and run accident Sunday evening.
According to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, Anita Wernsing, 78, of Fayette, was walking home from church when she was struck and killed.
Wernsing was leaving Mt. Tabor Primitive Church in the 7000 block of South State Road 267, trying to cross the street to reach her home, police said.
She was about 100 yards from the church when witnesses found her and called police, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, investigators said.
Wernsing was struck by a vehicle traveling north on State Road 267, police said.
Investigators said after striking Wernsing, the vehicle ran off the road then continued northbound without stopping.
Investigators are checking vehicle parts recovered at the scene for any information that could lead to an arrest.
