(COLUMBUS) - State police say a 13-year-old runaway lost control of a stolen car on a southern Indiana highway and it crashed down an embankment.
Police say the crash Monday morning at an Interstate 65 interchange a few miles south of Columbus injured both the girl and a 17-year-old boy who was a passenger.
Indianapolis Trooper John Meyers was in route to training in southern Indiana when he drove up on a south bound car on I-65 around the 66 mile marker that was speeding up and slowing down and swerving onto the emergency strip. When he turned on his lights to stop the car it took off at a high rate of speed.
Myers reported the car, 1998 Honda Accord, was driving erratically and that it took off at a high speed after he tried to stop it. The car exited I-65 at the 64 mile marker, and attempted to turn right, or west onto State Road 58. The car was unable to make the turn because it was traveling too fast and slid across State Road 58 and rolled down a stone embankment onto its top.
Police say both teens were runaways from Indianapolis. The girl was taken to a Columbus hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the boy was taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Columbus City Police, Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department and EMS/Rescue.
