(SPEEDWAY) - A mother is being investigated after she leaves her 14-month-old child alone inside a room at the Motel 6 in Speedway, then just taking off.
Joe LePage, of Fox 59 reports, it was a good thing a neighbor was in the right place at the right time.
"I think it is very fortunate that the neighbors were nearby and were able to see that the child was left unattended and were to be caring enough to make sure that child was placed in the proper hands," said Jim Thiele of the Speedway Police Department.
A 14-month-old child was found wandering around the Motel 6 off Crawfordsville Road in Speedway after the child's mother left it alone inside one of the rooms.
"Somehow the child was able to open the door and get out of the room," said Thiele.
Someone in a nearby room saw the child, then took it to the front desk of the motel.
"Our officers responded and being trying to determine where the child's mother was," said Thiele.
The child's mother was found less than an hour later. She had two other kids in her car with her at the time. Detectives are trying to figure out why she left the 14-month-old behind. All three children are now with the Department of Child Services.
The Motel 6 is not far from the highway, so investigators say it is very lucky the child did not end up walking into traffic.
The mother has not been arrested or charged yet, her kids will stay with DCS until things get sorted out.
