(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis Firefighters faced an extra hazard Wednesday night when battling a house fire in Franklin Township.
A call came into dispatchers to the 7800 block of Ithaca Way, in the Edgewood Trace subdivision, around 10:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found fire coming from the front of the home.
The home's occupants escaped without injury and alerted firefighters to ammunition in the garage.
Due to the heat of the fire, some of the .40 caliber ammunition that was housed in the garage exploded forcing firefighters to delay their attack into the heart of the fire.
An IFD spokesperson told Fox59 the fire did more than $200,000 dollars damage to the home.
No firefighters were injured.
The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis.
