(GREENFIELD) - A central Indiana mail carrier is being called a hero after his good timing and quick thinking helped save a man’s life.
In October, Greenfield mail carrier Paul Rogers was nearing the end of his route when he pulled up to the Curry house with a certified letter. It had to have a signature.
"So I was walking from where his mailbox was up to his house and found him lying on the ground face down," Paul Rogers said.
Chuck Curry had just returned home and wasn't feeling well when he collapsed.
Curry said he was walking up to the door and couldn't get up the steps and fell to the ground.
Curry had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, which caused a stroke.
Rogers knew Curry was in bad shape, so he called 911.
Curry was in a coma for nine days and underwent brain surgery. Doctors say he almost didn't make it.
Curry did survive and just last week, he finally met with Rogers to thank him in what he calls an emotional reunion.
"Paul was great and I really can't thank him enough," Chuck Curry said. "Without him, I don't know what would have happened for sure, but it couldn't have been good."
The Currys calls Rogers their hero humble.
The Currys say not only did Rogers save Chuck from the stroke, but he also might have saved him from cancer. Doctors discovered a pre-cancerous growth while he was in the hospital.
"Well it was a good feeling, but I was really just in the right place at the right time and dialing a phone number, that's all I really did," Rogers said.
