(INDIANAPOLIS) - Moms across the country marched in protest Saturday wanting Congress to put gun control measures in place.
Erin Murphy, of WISH TV8 reports, the organization, One Million Moms for Gun Control , was started by a concerned mom in Zionsville. The Indianapolis chapter started their demonstration at Monument Circle and marched to the State Capitol.
"We are about action. It's been six weeks since Newtown. We can't sit around and have debate and discussion about this. The 30 year experiment is over. We need change in our gun legislation and it needs to happen now," says Andrea Spiegelberg of One Million Moms for Gun Control.
The organization stretches across the country and was thought up by Zionsville mom Shannon Watts after watching the Sandy Hook massacre unfold that December day.
Indiana mom Andrea Spiegelberg was just as passionate after the school shooting so she stepped in to lead the Indianapolis chapter.
"I was on Facebook feeling the same way. 'What can I do? How can I take action?' I found out she's from Zionsville, called her up, and we met. I've been working with her ever since," explains Spiegelberg.
Just weeks later, 75 chapters are joining forces across the country and holding peaceful demonstrations including Indianapolis.
"I think its time that our legislators heard that they don't just listen to the money but they listen to the people who elected them," says Nancy Swigonski a demonstrator for the cause.
The protesters were met with opposition once they took to the state capitol's steps, but for those who braved the chilly weather it didn't stop them from speaking up.
"I'm here today because too many children have died in gun violence in our country. Every day an average of eight children die of gun related injuries," says Swigonski.
The founder of One Million Moms for Gun Control was in Washington D.C. Saturday leading the national protest.
