(MARION) - A 27-year-old Marion man faces charges in the death of his girlfriend’s young daughter.
Police arrested Donald W. Riddle on a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
Marion Police were called to investigate the death of two-year-old Arianna Carmack at around 9:45 pm Wednesday night. When officers arrived at the scene on South Miller Ave., they found the girl lying on the living room floor. She was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say Carmack had scalding burns on her face, as well as on the front and back of her torso. An autopsy conducted Thursday revealed flash burns from a chemical on the girl's skin.
Grant County Coroner Stephen Dorsey ruled the burns were not life-threatening, but contributed to the girl's death. He also noticed multiple bruises on the girl's legs, which were healing.
According to investigators, the girl, along with two other children, had been left with Riddle, who police say is the mother's boyfriend. Riddle had been living at the residence for the past few months.
The girl's mother found the child unresponsive in her bed and called 911. When police and medics arrived at the home, Riddle had already left.
Marion Police and the Grant County Sheriff's Department conducted a search and found Riddle at a friend's home in Sweetster early Thursday morning. He was arrested and brought to the Marion Police Department.
