(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis man is behind bars facing charges of robbery and criminal confinement. Police say he tied up a couple inside their home and held them at gunpoint.
Daniel Miller of WISH TV reports that the couple was able to get away from the man. One of them tackled, stabbed, and held him for police.
Scott Day and his girlfriend Katie Von Essen are doing better.
Tuesday they walked inside their home on the southwest side and smelled cigarette smoke. They knew that was odd, because no one smoked in the home.
What happened next is shocking. A man jumped out with a gun.
Day described the terrifying moments that he and Von Essen endured Tuesday as they confronted 26 year-old Jason Monahan inside their home.
Monahan had a gun and directed them to the living room, telling them to get down. He then had Day stand back up and took him to the bathroom where he tied Day up with a bungee cord.
The man then left, and Day heard him cursing at Von Essen.
Day busted out of the bungee cord, left the bathroom and was able to grab a knife. When he entered the room where the man and Von Essen was the man had his back to him. That is when Day tackled the man and stabbed him.
Day even stabbed himself trying to get Monahan down.
Von Essen called 911.
Day then trapped the man in a bedroom and guarded the door till police arrived.
When police arrived, they discovered Monahan was carrying a toy gun.
Scott says he won't ever forget the day. It all happened on his 21st birthday - much of it in the hospital getting stitches for his wounds.
