(UNDATED) - With another seven weeks of heavy snow and ice possible, INDOT says its got plenty of money left to cover the cost.
INDOT Spokesman Nathan Riggs says they've spent about $17.5 million on total snow and ice road preps and removal this winter season. He says Laporte and Fort Wayne have been busy all season fighting off lake effect snow.
Riggs says for the past five years the state has budgeted about $36 million a year to tackle tough winter road conditions. He says that includes salt, trucks, fuel, manpower and all.
Riggs says they've become more cost efficient over the past few years and a couple of milder winters have helped. He says the state has an adequate salt pile to get through the remainder of this winter.
He says state crews were out all day Thursday and overnight treating state roads with a salt-brine solution to keep snow and freezing rain from forming ice on the pavement. Riggs says it's a 23-percent water-salt type solution.
