(FORT WAYNE) - A 7-year-old found a gun at her bus stop on the corner of East Pontiac Street and Weisser Park Avenue on Wednesday morning.
According to police, two young girls were waiting for their bus when they discovered a handgun between two buildings. Police said they called an adult and was told to leave their bus stop immediately.
"They stopped, they didn't touch, they walked away and they notified an adult," said Fort Wayne Police spokesperson Raquel Foster. "That is exactly the message that we need for our little ones to know."
Police arrived to the scene and found the gun was loaded. Foster said this gun could have been used in a crime.
"When there are vehicle pursuits, foot pursuits, our fleeing perpetrators are discarding items," said Foster. "Usually, if it's not drugs, it will be firearms."
Fort Wayne Police said the crime lab will process the gun for any fingerprints. So far, the gun has not been reported stolen. Foster said crime scene investigators will see if the gun could be link to a crime.
