(STATEHOUSE) - House Speaker Brian Bosma is taking a tougher line on Governor Pence’s income tax cut, after a barrage of ads bashing the House for not passing it.
Until now, Bosma has emphasized legislators won't make a final decision on cutting taxes until after next month's state revenue forecast. But after a radio and TV assault by the conservative group Americans for Prosperity, he's going further, suggesting Pence's tax cut isn't as "well thought out" as cuts legislators have already enacted over the last decade, and saying Pence should have consulted legislative leaders before announcing it in last year's campaign.
Bosma says nearly the entire difference between the House's spending levels and Pence's lies in their funding of schools and roads, and says many voters have told him they prefer those expenditures to the tax cut.
The House budget spends 600-million dollars more than Pence proposed over two years. Both spending plans remove additional money from the bottom line -- Pence through his tax cut, the House by repaying some bonds early and holding some rainy-day school money in reserve.
