(FULTON COUNTY) - A man who entered a standoff with police during a domestic situation in Fulton County was hospitalized in serious condition after being shot.
About 8 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police along with Fulton, Kewana and Rochester authorities were sent to a home in the 300 block of West Brown Street in Fulton on reports of a domestic situation gunshots. When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, identified as Nicholas Westerhoff, 46, was inside the home. Police ordered him to come out, but he refused.
ISP then set up a perimeter around the home and officers began to negotiate with Westerhoff, but they were unsuccessful. At one point, officers heard several gunshots inside the home. About three hours later, police said Westerhoff came to the door and started shooting. Officers returned fire and Westerhoff was injured in the exchange.
Westerhoff was flown by medical helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne where he was listed in serious condition.
No officers were injured in the standoff and police did not say if anyone else was inside the home during the incident.
