(RIPLEY COUNTY) - Three high school students were killed and three others were injured in a crash in Ripley County on Thursday.
Derrik Thomas and Rafael Sanchez of TheIndyChannel.com staff report that the crash happened just before 10 a.m. at the intersection of Fairgrounds Road and County Road 850 West in Ripley County on the southeastern edge of the state, when a Dodge Ram 3500 and a Ford F250 collided.
Crash investigators said it appeared both vehicles disregarded a stop sign, causing the crash. The Dodge Ram was eastbound on Fairgrounds Road and the Ford F250 was northbound on County Road 850 W, and investigators said the Dodge struck the F250.
Police identified the three killed as Timothy Bowman, 17, of Osgood; Jacob Vogel, 18, of Versailles; and Samantha Hanson, 18, of Holton.
The injured students were identified as Thomas Crawford, 17, of Dillsboro; Caleb Cumberworth, 15, of Holton; and Kayla Adkinson, 15, of Holton.
Crawford was taken to University Hospital in Cincinnati with chest injuries, police said. Cumberworth suffered a minor injury to one of his hands. Police did not release informaiton about Adkinson's condition.
All six of the teens were students at South Ripley High School in Versailles.
South Ripley Schools Supt. Rob Moorhead said the students were attending an all-day, school-approved FFA event at Hopewell Baptist Church, but it is not clear why the students left the event early.
"These were great kids," Moorhead said. "They were doing a great thing today participating in this community event."
Moorhead said grief counselors were available Thursday for students, staff and parents in the community.
